There are many imaginative pretend play ideas that this free-standing fresh mart grocery store from Melissa and Doug, brings to mind.
Whether it’s serving and getting payment from customers, stock-checking, shelf stacking, or taking deliveries, this playset will keep kids occupied and having fun for hours, as either the grocer or the shopper.
Cash drawer and conveyor belt crank
Card swipe machine & product scanner
The grocery store arrives flat-packed (its heavy) and needs to be assembled into its L-shape. This will take between one and two hours depending on experience, but it only requires a screwdriver. It’s easy.
You get what you see in the main photograph - just the furniture item - so you’ll need to buy separately any accessories you want, such as play food and money, fruit and veg and any other items your kids may want to sell.
You can use some empty real food packaging to create some initial stock for the young business owner to get started quickly, but longterm you’ll find it best to get some plastic or wooden pretend food items to enhance their playtime.
There's still a lot of detail built into this well thought out design that makes it such a delightful toy. The conveyor belt moves groceries along manually by turning a crank; the scanner beeps when purchases are scanned through; the grocer has a cash drawer to keep the money.
On the customer side there is plenty of shelving to display pretend merchandise, a bagging area and a card swipe machine.
For pretend play as either grocer or customer this playset is a treat.
Here are some accessory ideas to go with your Fresh Mart Grocery Store
This companion set to the Fresh Mart Grocery Store (by M&D) is a must have. Personally, I would have thought it best to provide it with the Store unit, rather than as a separate item. Never-the-less it's a great addition.
It's a 70-piece playset which includes: store assistant's apron, checkout divider, grocery boxes and cans, and play money.
Also, an impulse-buy rack with lip balm, granola bar, gum, magazine, gift cards and signs.
There's also a cloth shopping bag.
Melissa & Doug's Pretend to Spend Play Wallet is a good start. All businesses need a cash float, right? And customers need money to spend.
The 45-piece pack includes 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar play bills, 19 play coins - pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, and a toy wallet.
Ten different write-on cards including: driving license, bank and library cards, health and Gym memberships, bus pass and more are just right for customer ID. There are even some coupons.
A colorful selection of play foods comes with the 'Let's Play House' grocery cans also from Melissa and Doug.
These have cardboard sides & plastic lids and have colorful labels for kids to learn and recognize food types.
Melissa and Doug Food Groups gives you four crates with wooden play food in the food groups: dairy, meat & fish, grains and fresh produce.
They're smooth, nicely colored pieces of wood and will help encourage creative play.
