Fisher-Price Octopus Musical Toy – Rocktopus
The Think and Learn Rocktopus from Fisher-Price is an exciting musical technology toy for preschoolers. It’s an educational toy that uses interactive games and free play to help kids learn about music and math. It has a 2019 Toy of The Year Award.
What can Rocktopus do?
This octopus musical toy uses the sounds of different instruments and music styles, to create some structured and free-thinking gameplay.
It teaches mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, and patterns, and will teach kids how to follow instructions.
There are fifteen musical instruments in the form of pods that plug into four of the Rocktopus tentacles. And there are three ways to play.
Kids play in one of three modes, selected via the black buttons:
- Math Mode - practices addition, subtraction and patterning skills.
- Music Mode - kids compose tunes by mixing & re-mixing instruments.
- Game Mode - Rocktopus prompts kids through 5 gameplay levels.
Up to 4 of the musical instrument pods can be plugged in at the same time to create a wide range of sounds.
The red button slows the music; the green button speeds it up. The big blue button adds sounds or phrases to the music.
Rocktopus recognizes when a pod is inserted or tapped and will respond.
A tray at the rear of the toy completes the eight octopus tentacles. It only serves to store two pods. You need to clip this in place when you unpack the toy, and once in place, it cannot be removed.
As there are fifteen music pods and only six can be slotted in place at any time you will need to store the rest somewhere safe when Rocktopus is put away after playtime. For this reason, you may decide not to clip the rear tray in place — your choice.
A free downloadable app is available that creates neat music videos to play with their compositions.
