Unboxing the Star Trek Enterprise Drone
In the box you get a replica Star Trek USS Enterprise drone, a remote controller, a display stand, a USB charging cable and instruction guide. You will need to charge the rechargeable battery pack in the drone, and fit 4 AA cells to the transmitter before your maiden flight. Otherwise the drone is ready to use out the box.
Charging is easy. On the underside of the hull there's the on/off switch and the USB socket, so it's just a case of plugging the cable in. There are LEDs in the body that make the drone look really cool, especially when the house lights are dimmed, but they have some functionality as well as just visual appeal. The lights indicate the state of battery charging - a pulsing blue light - and that looks awesome as well.
Star Trek Enterprise Drone Flying
This USS enterprise drone is easy to fly, but it does take a bit of practice initially to get it right. It’s a good idea to launch the drone from a firm and flat surface rather than using a hand launch.
This enables a smooth take-off and for the gyroscopic adjustments to be made by the drone. Taking off from the display stand is fine as well.
It utilizes quad-copter technology that enables it to remain stable in flight. If you experience drifting (drone moves side to side or forwards and backwards) or spinning, you just need to adjust the Trim controls.
Spin trim is below the speed control joystick on the remote controller and drift trim at the side of the directional joystick.
There's a neat Warp Speed button. This makes the drone fly a bit faster - not a real racing speed but gives just enough extra oomph to increase the fun of it all.
You get about a maximum ten minutes of flying time before needing to recharge the batteries. It seems quite robust and able to take quite a few prangs.
A nice touch is that after you’ve flown your USS Enterprise, you can put it on the display stand, either to recharge it, or as a neat decorative feature.
The remote controller has the standard 2 joystick set up. Throttle on one side, directional control on the other. There are trim controls, on/off switch, warp speed button and light and sound effects which can be turned on and off as well.
The sound effects are great - nostalgic and much loved sounds like those of 'Energize', 'Alert' and 'Comms'.
